At the foot of magnificent glacial carved mountains facing the Pacific Ocean on Baranof Island, Sitka is located on the outer coast of Alaska’s Inside Passage and lies at the heart of the largest temperate rain forest in the world, the Tongass National Forest. With views of island-studded waters and forests descending to the water’s edge, Sitka is home to just under 9,000 people and the fourth-largest city by population in Alaska.
Sitka is perfect for the nature lovers at heart. Known for its Halibut/Salmon fishing, Sitka waters allow many to cruise along its gentle waves to enjoy a romantic dinner or have an adventurous journey of catching freshwater or saltwater fish. According to the Alaska State Department of Fish and Game, the Sitka Sound area has the best King Salmon catch rate in all of southeastern Alaska.
Along with the unsurpassed saltwater and freshwater fishing, you will have the opportunity to view and photograph the scenery and wildlife such as humpback whales, bald eagles, sea otters, and tufted puffins.
Not only is the fishing terrific, but also there is an array of other activities for sightseeing on or off the water. Maybe you would be interested in quality fair-chase hunts for mountain goat, brown and black bear or taking non-hunting trips for photography, sightseeing, and whale and bear watching excursions.
Currently, Sitka is the 6th largest port by value in the United States and has the largest harbor system in Alaska with 1,347 permanent slips.
