“When I was young my parents and I always had a little game of hide the presents-find the presents, or so I thought. I came to discover as I got older that they really just wanted to surprise me on Christmas day. As it turns out I was the only one who thought it was a game and almost lost in a BIG way one year.
I was about 10 and my sister 7 as Christmas was approaching this particular year. As I finished Thanksgiving dinner that year my mind was already racing with all the possible stowaways, nooks, crannies, and for all I knew trap doors my parents could possibly employ to hinder me finding my presents before Christmas day! I went through the house as quickly and meticulously as a detective scouring a crime scene; time was of the essence as my parents had figured out by this point not to leave me alone in the house for too long. Empty, not a single present!! Had I really been that bad this year? Just as I had begun to concede defeat to the parents for whom this ironically wasn’t even a game, I happened upon our shed. As I walked out to the building I noticed it was abnormally locked, my father typically just ‘dummy’ locked the door. Strange, why would a storage building with plenty of room for presents be unusually locked this close to Christmas? Maniacally my mind began to race, let the games begin oh dear parents…let the games begin!
After many more complicated but albeit hair brained schemes had been concocted, I opted to use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the hinges from the door. So simple yet so brilliant I naively thought. Enter the infamous little sister and her most famous line, ‘I can keep a secret.’ At this point I was busted, my only choice; to make her an accomplice! I had hopes that she would fear the trouble she could be in so much that there was no way she could tattle. Oh isn’t youthful ignorance bliss? I doubt it was even a day after the presents were discovered that I saw the look in my dad’s eyes. The look of disappointment, defeat, frustration, but most importantly the look that said, ‘You’ll be lucky to get a switch and lump of coal this year’.
As it turns out our mom, with her oh so understandable demeanor, was able to talk the Scrooge out of him and get him back into the mood of Christmas Present just enough for us to still get our presents; but that will always be our family’s Ghost of Christmas Past!”
“It was my first year in Texas and I didn’t know anyone. My boyfriend traveled 2 hours to get me the best Christmas present…a new puppy! When I arrived home from a long day at work, he was sitting in a big red box and wearing a bow. The funny thing is….I didn’t even notice him at first and my boyfriend kept asking if I noticed anything new…haircut…tv…I don’t know then I turned around and saw him. Three years later he is still the best present that I’ve received and he goes everywhere with me so no matter where I move to, I always know someone.”
“My best memory is growing up and every Christmas Eve, the Fire Department would dress up as Santa and drive around in the Fire Engine at dusk to give out candy to every block.”
What are your favorite holiday songs? Here are some of ours: Three team members vote for the new Josh Groban version of “O Holy Night,” The Chipmunks’ “Christmas Time is Here,” and “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.”
