This is a question recruiters receive almost on a daily basis. The answer is yes but we’re steady. Right now the best metaphor relates to the Tortoise and the Hare story. Slow and steady ended up winning the race and that is our current pace for travel nursing. Everything revolves around a nurse being flexible for location and having a “go getter” attitude to sell yourself during the interview and obtain extra credentials if necessary. The good news is that we have seen jobs open in the past week in several locations that were dry in 2009. This proves that we should continue to be optimistic. Cirrus Medical Staffing will continue to provide updates to our travelers with changes in the industry but currently, any specialty working with children will have positions open at least through Spring.

This week’s new jobs include:

ER in Hilton Head, SC

MS/TELE in Tampa, FL

ICU in Jacksonville, FL

L&D in Modesto, CA

CVICU in Wilmington, NC

OR in Portland, OR

OB/Nursery in Shiprock, NM

Love it or hate it, we’re 4 days away from Valentine’s Day. While no one knows for sure the story with Saint Valentine and how this day started, Americans have been practicing this holiday since the early 1700’s. The Cirrus Medical Recruiters wanted to share some of our most memorable Valentine’s (good or bad). Share with us some of your best or worst stories!

JL – I had a relatively new boyfriend at the time and had bought him a very nice cologne set (well nice for 1990’s). When it came time to exchange gifts, I realized that he hadn’t bought me anything! In a panic, he ran out to find me a gift and came back with a single pearl on a gold chain. Now before anyone says “awww” we’re not talking about a real pearl on a real gold chain…..probably one of the worst presents I’ve received in my adult life.

SS – I got married on Valentine’s day to my second husband. It was a very sweet ceremony with my 7 year old daughter as my maid of honor and his 5 year old son as the best man.

SG – It was my first (although I didn’t remember him at the time) Valentine’s with my now husband. We met in January and I honestly didn’t remember him by the time Valentine’s came around but I received this card in the mail from him. The card said “take your right hand and put it on your left shoulder and take your left hand and put it on your right shoulder…now squeeze! It’s a hug from me to you.” I thought he was absolutely crazy! Who is this guy and how did he get my address! Well that led to a phone call and now 10 years later, we’ve been married for 7 years and have a beautiful little girl. Maybe he’s not so crazy.

CM – Last year while my wife was out of work I took the day off and decided to surprise her. I showed up at home and rang the doorbell with a bouquet of roses in my hand. I had the roses in the peep hole so that she wouldn’t know who it was and she was so surprised!

MG – I took my girlfriend to a very nice restaurant downtown. The place wasn’t crowded at all and we were seated upstairs all alone next to the window where we could hear the jazz band playing on the street. She always knew that if and when I proposed it would be to the song “Wonderful Tonight.” Well of course that song started to play and I thought it would be funny…so I started to get down on one knee as a joke and then started laughing. She started crying immediately! Now looking back I realize how horrible of a thing that was to do.

AP – My best Valentine’s day was years ago. I showed up at my boyfriend’s house and there was a rose on the doorstep with a note. This led me to another room with another note and so the scavenger hunt began. It led me to a gorgeous diamond and sapphire bracelet and then he played a song that he had written just for me!

On Thursday, President Barack Obama rallied House Democrats around the healthcare bill and an economy that he says will improve as they head into a midterm election campaign.

Obama said that the legislation Congress passed since he became president is moving the economy forward and that Republican opposition to the healthcare bill will buoy Democrats in November.

“Let me tell you something, if Republicans want to campaign against something by standing up for the status quo and for insurance companies over families and businesses, that is a fight I want to have,” Obama said.

“If their best idea is to return to the bad policies and the bad ideas of yesterday, they are going to lose that argument,” he added.

Obama spoke before the entire House Democratic Caucus in the Capitol as part of the Democrats’ jobs summit. The president and the caucus’s leaders said that the economy is in better shape than it was when Obama took office almost exactly a year ago, and that they’ll take more steps to create jobs with the unemployment rate now at 9.7 percent.

“Thanks to what you did, we can say now what we could not say a year ago,” Obama said. “America is moving forward again.”

The president’s speech launched several salvos at Republicans that Democrats will likely echo in the 2010 campaign. House Democrats are trying to buck historical trends in retaining a large House majority despite holding the White House at the same time.

Obama said that stimulus investments in education, new regulations on to protect consumers from credit card companies, a bill helping women seek for equal pay as male colleagues and other legislation passed in 2009 has helped the country move in a new direction after the Bush administration.

Last year, we noticed that hospitals became more and more particular with their requirements and experience levels for nurses. This year hospitals will continue to be choosy as they have more candidates to chose from and will continue to raise the bar with not only experienced RN’s but experienced travelers as well. So as a traveling nurse, what can you do to stand out if you don’t have numerous travel assignments under your belt? Cirrus Medical Staffing has a few tips for you.

Obtain additional credentials. If you are a Medical Surgical RN, obtain an ACLS in addition to your BLS. Emergency department nurses can obtain a TNCC or ENPC which will cut down on your competition.

Gain computer charting experience. More and more hospitals across the nation are requiring previous computer charting experience from travelers. Software systems such as Meditech, Mckesson and Cerner are the most popular.

If you are thinking about becoming a traveler, ask your current hospital to float to other units to add additional experience to your resume. This doesn’t just apply y to the Step down units anymore, but ER nurses are being asked to have ICU experience as well.

Maintain your records and keep all immunizations and certifications up to date. This speeds up your availability date which may make you a better fit for the hospital.

Above everything, remember to be flexible!
